Supervisor Janice Hahn endorses Tonia Reyes Uranga for Long Beach School Board
Long Beach, CA – Today Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn announced her endorsement of Tonia Reyes Uranga’s campaign to serve students on the Long Beach School Board. Former Long Beach City Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga announced in June that she is running to fill a vacant seat on the Long Beach Unified School District Board, Area 2.
In announcing her endorsement, Supervisor Janice Hahn released the following statement:
“Tonia Reyes Uranga has been serving Long Beach for decades in her non-profit work, community service, and public service in elected office. Tonia will work hard to make sure that every child has a safe and supportive school environment, a high quality education, and great teachers who prepare them to succeed. Long Beach students deserve to have an education advocate and committed public servant working for them. That’s why I’m supporting Tonia Reyes Uranga for School Board.”
Supervisor Janice Hahn has a long record of service to Long Beach and to greater Los Angeles, including ten years on the Los Angeles City Council, six years in the United States Congress, and, since 2016, three years on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Supervisor Hahn represents District 4 on the Board of Supervisors, which includes all of Long Beach and the South Bay.
Tonia Reyes Uranga is a former Long Beach City Councilmember, education advocate, mother, and grandmother. Tonia is a 45-year Long Beach resident, and she previously served as a member of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Governing Board. She is the vice president of Goals for Life, a non-profit mentoring program that couples retired NFL players with school-age youth, and she serves on the board of the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE). Recognitions given to Tonia for her work in the community include the Women in Non-Traditional Employment Role’s Public Service Award, Leadership California’s Community Leader Award, the NAACP’s Humanitarian Award, the Long Beach LAMBDA Democratic Club’s Human Rights Award, and the Long Beach Area Peace Network’s Champion of Justice Award.
Professionally, Tonia has over 30 years of experience in workforce and employment issues in the areas of administration, contract compliance, and program development. Much of Tonia’s work has centered on improving conditions for women in the workplace.
Tonia earned her B.A. at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School’s Executive Education Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government. She and her husband, Long Beach City Councilmember Roberto Uranga, live in the Wrigley neighborhood of Long Beach.
